Santiago Cañizares at the La Timba Tournament
Former Spain international goalkeeper Santiago Cañizares has won the La Timba poker tournament organized by Winamax, earning a seat in one of the most prestigious events in the sport — the World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event in Las Vegas.
Cañizares prevailed in the final heads-up to secure a package for the WSOP Main Event. For the former footballer, it marks one of the most notable achievements of his poker career to date.
In football, Cañizares is best known as a former goalkeeper for the Spain national team and Valencia. In the early 2000s, he reached the UEFA Champions League final twice with the Spanish club and was widely regarded as one of the country’s leading goalkeepers. He also represented Spain at major international tournaments.
Since retiring from professional football, Cañizares has been actively involved in poker and regularly competes in tournaments. He has yet to claim major international titles or a WSOP bracelet, but his victory at La Timba gives him an opportunity to test himself on poker’s biggest stage. Whether the former goalkeeper can replicate his footballing success at the poker table will be determined in Las Vegas.
Gambling Park previously reported that PokerStars may undergo a rebranding in the United States or exit the market, with plans to launch a FanDuel poker platform in its place.
