Licensed online bookmakers in France generated €157 million in gross gaming revenue from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to data published by the French gambling regulator, the Autorité Nationale des Jeux (ANJ).
The figure does not represent the companies’ net profit. Gross gaming revenue, or GGR, is the difference between the total amount wagered and the winnings paid out to customers.
French residents placed more than €1.3 billion in bets on matches during the tournament.
Compared with the 2022 World Cup, bookmakers’ GGR more than doubled. It stood at €70 million four years earlier, when total betting turnover reached €597 million.
The increase was mainly driven by the expansion of the tournament and the continued growth of France’s online betting market. The World Cup featured 48 teams for the first time, up from 32, while the number of matches increased from 64 to 104. France’s run to the semifinals also helped generate additional interest.
The number of people in France who bet on the tournament rose from 2.2 million to 3.1 million.
They placed around 113 million bets during the competition, compared with 54 million at the 2022 World Cup.
However, the €157 million figure should not be treated as bookmakers’ profit. Operators must use their GGR to pay taxes and mandatory contributions, as well as cover their operating expenses.
