The National Football League (NFL) has toughened up its stance on gambling, imposing harsher penalties for players who place bets on NFL games, especially those involving their own teams.

According to The Guardian, any player caught betting on their own team will face a minimum suspension of 2 years. That’s twice as long as the previous one-year ban.

Players who bet on games involving other NFL teams will also face longer suspensions. The minimum ban for such cases will be one year.

On the other hand, the NFL has eased up a bit on the punishment for betting on events unrelated to the NFL (tennis, hockey, or basketball). Here’s how it works:

  • First offense: Two-game suspension without pay (down from six games).
  • Second offense: Six-game suspension without pay.
  • Third offense: One-year suspension without pay.

The NFL also clarified the sanctions for other types of misconduct:

  • Involvement in match-fixing: Lifetime ban from the league.
  • Spreading insider information: Minimum one-year suspension.
  • Placing bets through intermediaries: Minimum one-year suspension.
