Gambling group Entain has analysed bets on the winner of the 2026 World Cup placed across its betting brands in different countries, comparing how often customers backed their own national team to win the tournament.
The data formed the basis of the company’s Patriotic Punter Index. According to Entain, only 20% of World Cup winner bets placed by bettors in England were on England.
The figure is relatively low given England’s status as one of the favourites for the 2026 World Cup. The team will face Croatia, Ghana and Panama in Group L, opening their campaign against Croatia on 17 June.
Bettors in Portugal were the most “patriotic”, with 57% of World Cup winner bets in the country placed on Portugal. That is almost three times the figure recorded in England.
| Rank | Country | Share of bets on own national team |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Portugal | 57% |
| 2 | France | 29% |
| 3 | Austria | 25% |
| 4 | Germany | 24% |
| 5 | Colombia | 23% |
| 6 | Brazil | 21% |
| 7 | England | 20% |
Entain said the figures show a distinction between supporting a national team and seeking value in a bet: a fan may support their country emotionally while backing the outcome they consider more likely.
