Earlier this month, major casinos in Las Vegas introduced a new rule for poker players, according to Casino Nieuws. Under the new regulation, players can now only exchange poker chips for cash at the specific casino where the chips were originally won.
Previously, it was possible, for example, for a player to win poker chips at the MGM Grand and then exchange them for cash at Wynn Casino. That option is no longer available.
This measure aims to prevent money laundering. It was noted that the ability to move large amounts of poker chips between different casinos created significant opportunities to obscure financial transactions.
The initiative to implement this new rule originated from the casinos themselves, particularly those hosting poker rooms.
Interestingly, the ban on exchanging chips at different properties applies exclusively to poker. Other table games involving chips have, for reasons currently unclear, been exempt from the restriction. It’s also worth noting that, as of now, the rule has only been implemented in Las Vegas.
Gambling Park notes: Currently, there are 10 poker rooms on the Las Vegas Strip, located at Bellagio, Aria, Caesars Palace, Mandalay Bay, Horseshoe, MGM Grand, Planet Hollywood, Venetian, Resorts World, and Wynn.
