An investigation into possible match manipulation involving Malta’s men’s national water polo team has been expanded, the Times of Malta reported.
According to sources familiar with the matter, the initial inquiry focused on four members of the national squad. Investigators are now considering whether other individuals may also have been involved in potential violations.
International governing bodies World Aquatics and European Aquatics have joined the probe. Their representatives have held meetings with Maltese investigative authorities.
The investigation is primarily examining matches played at the European Championship in Belgrade. Particular attention is being given to the team’s opening game against Montenegro, which ended in a 21–12 defeat. Authorities are reviewing possible bets placed on the final goal margin in that match. A 22–13 loss to France is also under scrutiny.
Investigators are considering whether intermediaries may have been used to place bets on matches involving the Maltese team.
Separately, authorities are examining the use of athletes’ personal betting accounts to place wagers on other water polo matches.
Malta’s Gaming Authority has submitted a report outlining the findings of its own review to the police. The contents of the report have not been disclosed.
Under the rules of World Aquatics, athletes, coaches and officials are prohibited from betting on aquatic sports competitions. If violations are confirmed, international sporting bodies may impose sanctions, including lifetime bans.
Earlier, Gambling Park reported on the suspension of Argentine tennis player Hernán Casanova for breaching betting regulations.
