Malta’s gambling regulator, the Malta Gaming Authority (MGA), has reported a security breach affecting one of its systems, iGaming Expert reported. The authority did not disclose technical details but said immediate steps were taken to contain the incident and that an investigation had been launched.
Preliminary findings suggest the breach may be linked to an external individual who posed as a cybersecurity specialist.
Such experts, often referred to as “white hat” hackers, typically identify vulnerabilities and report them to system owners. In this case, however, the individual is believed to have falsely claimed such credentials to gain access to the system.
In a statement, the regulator said the incident had been detected at an early stage. Containment measures were implemented and a detailed technical investigation was initiated. The MGA added it is cooperating with relevant authorities to assess the situation.
The authority said the investigation is ongoing and being conducted in collaboration with technical experts and competent authorities. At this stage, the MGA has not reported any data leaks or compromise of information.
The incident has drawn market attention as the MGA is one of Europe’s key iGaming regulators. More than 300 companies, including major international operators, operate under its licence. While no direct damage has been confirmed, issues at the regulator could have broader implications for the market.
