The National Basketball Association (NBA), together with the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), has voiced support for stricter regulations on prop bets in sportsbooks, Next.io reports.
While no final decision has been made, discussions are ongoing amid growing concerns over recent betting scandals involving NBA players.
One of the most notable cases was last year’s scandal surrounding former Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter, who received a lifetime ban for sharing insider information with bettors and participating in wagers himself. Other players, including Terry Rozier and Malik Beasley, are currently under investigation.
Another reason driving the push for restrictions is the rise of abusive behavior from disgruntled bettors. Players have increasingly reported harassment and even death threats on social media following lost wagers.
“This is about protecting players from harassment,” an NBPA representative said. “Players are concerned that prop bets on individual performances are becoming a dangerous source of abuse, both online and in real life. If stricter rules can help reduce this, we support closer scrutiny.”
Earlier, Gambling Park reported that U.S. bookmaker FanDuel had begun suspending customers who threatened athletes.
