The UK government plans to launch a public consultation on banning sponsorship agreements between sports clubs and gambling companies that are not licensed in the country, The Guardian reports.
The proposal is not new. In February 2026, the government said it would consider such a ban and pledged to begin consultations in the spring. However, the process was delayed, allowing clubs to continue signing deals with offshore operators.
The issue returned to the spotlight after Everton signed a new sponsorship agreement with Stake.com. The crypto casino operator’s logo will appear on the sleeves of the club’s match shirts.
The deal was signed after Stake withdrew from the UK market. In 2025, the operator surrendered its licence amid a regulatory investigation. The Gambling Commission subsequently warned clubs that they could face liability for promoting offshore operators that accept bets from British customers. Stake maintains that it does not serve customers in the UK.
Entain chief executive Stella David previously urged the government to accelerate the introduction of restrictions. She warned that the delay could be interpreted by football clubs as an opportunity to sign new agreements with unlicensed operators.
David also proposed warning the Premier League that such sponsorship deals could be terminated during the season if the government introduces a ban following the consultation.
Gambling Park notes that Premier League clubs will voluntarily end front-of-shirt gambling sponsorships from the 2026/27 season. Operators will still be allowed to place their logos on shirt sleeves, training wear and pitchside advertising boards.
