Following Italy’s disappointing exit from Euro 2024, the Italian press has been digging for reasons behind the team’s underperformance.
While some players have expressed disagreements with head coach Luciano Spalletti’s tactical decisions, a deeper rift appears to have emerged within the squad. The overall team atmosphere was far from ideal, Repubblica reports.
One particular source of contention arose from Nicolò Fagioli’s inclusion in the national team for the Euros. The Juventus midfielder had recently served a seven-month ban for his involvement in betting activities. While his physical fitness or personal views on betting were not in question, some Italian players reportedly expressed their displeasure with his call-up.
The crux of the issue lies in Fagioli’s alleged role as a “snitch.” It is believed that his testimony in an illegal betting case resulted in the suspension of fellow national team player and Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali.
Tonali received a 10-month ban from football due to his involvement in betting.
For context, Italy barely escaped the group stage, collecting only 4 points in three matches. They were ultimately eliminated in the Round of 16 by a convincing 2-0 defeat to Switzerland.
