Sandro Tonali

Italian footballer Sandro Tonali, who plays for English club Newcastle United and represents the Italian national team, is under scrutiny once again, as reported by The Guardian.

This time, the Football Association (FA) has leveled fresh accusations related to gambling violations against him.

Between August 12 and October 12, 2023, Tonali allegedly placed 50 bets on football events. These wagers coincided with his transfer from AC Milan to Newcastle United, with some involving matches of the latter.

But let’s rewind: Tonali is no stranger to the consequences of gambling. The Italian Football Federation previously slapped him with a 10-month suspension for similar transgressions. Acknowledging his struggles, Tonali committed to an 8-month treatment for gambling addiction and was tasked with making at least 16 public appearances to raise awareness about the risks associated with betting.

Now, as Tonali serves the midway point of his existing suspension, a new question looms: Will the FA extend his penalty?

Alternatively, they might view the recent alleged violations as a continuation of the same betting period, potentially offering a path to forgiveness.
