The Rwanda Football Association (FERWAFA) is taking a definitive stand against match-fixing and the use of witchcraft, known locally as ‘Juju’, in football. The New Times has reported on FERWAFA’s commitment to eradicating these practices from the sport.
FERWAFA’s technical advisor, Jules Karangwa, announced during a media briefing that stringent actions are set to be implemented against those engaging in match-fixing and ‘Juju’. These practices are not only in violation of football’s regulations but are also deemed criminal offenses within Rwanda.
In a notable instance last August, Karangwa openly criticized local football club leaders for misappropriating funds on witchcraft, neglecting essential expenditures like equipment and training gear.
Moving forward, FERWAFA representatives have declared that tackling these illicit activities is a top agenda for the forthcoming season. This initiative is part of a broader strategy aimed at bolstering the international standing and reputation of Rwandan football.
It’s important to note that FERWAFA prohibited witchcraft rituals during matches back in 2016, responding to player concerns about their potential impact on game results. Subsequent penalties for such violations included technical defeats imposed on offending clubs.
