Brazilian football clubs are considering publicly backing presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro following the country’s ban on sports betting, according to BandNews TV journalist Rodolfo Schneider.
The discussions were prompted by incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s decision to ban online sports betting and online casinos. Licensed bookmakers ceased operations in Brazil on October 6, leaving football clubs unable to promote their brands.
The ban has dealt a major blow to football funding. In 2025, bookmakers were the main sponsors of 14 of the 20 clubs in Brazil’s top division. Teams are now being forced to look for alternative sources of revenue.
Bolsonaro has previously said he would legalize sports betting if elected, while keeping online casinos banned. However, he has yet to present a detailed plan for reopening the betting market.
Some clubs are reportedly discussing whether to publicly endorse Bolsonaro, hoping that a victory would pave the way for betting sponsors to return. However, no club has officially announced its support for the candidate.
The second round of Brazil’s presidential election is scheduled for October 25. In the first round, Bolsonaro received 47.03% of the vote, compared with 45.16% for Lula da Silva.
