Nicolò Fagioli, the Juventus and Italy midfielder, has admitted to illegal betting and accepted a 7-month suspension. He also has to pay a fine of 125,000 euros (about $132,000). The Italian Football Federation (FIFC) announced this on its website.
The 7-month ban means that Fagioli will miss the rest of the 2023/2024 season. But it could have been worse. He could have faced a 3-year ban.
Fagioli got a shorter suspension because he cooperated with the investigation and confessed to his gambling problem. His gambling addiction was also a mitigating factor in his case.
Besides the ban, Fagioli has to do some corrective activities. He has to take part in 10 public events organized by groups that fight gambling addiction. These events will last for 5 months.
If he doesn’t show up, his suspension will be extended to 12 months.
Fagioli has also started treatment for his gambling addiction, which will last for six months.
Two other Italian soccer players, Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United and Nicolò Zaniolo from Aston Villa, could also face suspensions for betting with illegal platform.
