The UK government has finally released its long-awaited white paper containing proposals to reform existing gambling laws.
Slot machine betting limits: In response to concerns about the risks posed by online slot machines, the government has proposed setting a limit on bets ranging from £2 to £15 per spin ($2,5 to $18,6). This is intended to mitigate the potential for gambling addiction, particularly among the 18 to 24 age group, who are deemed to be the most vulnerable.
Mandatory fees for bookmakers: The government has also suggested that bookmakers should be required to pay a fixed fee for the treatment of gambling addiction. Currently, such contributions are made voluntarily.
Stricter player checks: To prevent significant losses by vulnerable players, the government proposes implementing checks on those who lose £1,000 ($1,240) in 24 hours or £2,000 ($2,480) in 90 days.
However, it remains unclear how the user verification process will be conducted.
Here are other measures proposed in the white paper:
- The UK Gambling Commission (UKGC) will be granted additional powers to combat unlicensed gambling companies, including the ability to obtain court orders and work with internet service providers to remove and block illegal gambling sites.
- Rules will be implemented to prevent harm from bonus offers, which may involve restrictions on certain types of bonuses like free bets and spins.
- To protect minors, all loopholes will be closed to prevent individuals under the age of 18 from participating in gambling, including all types of lotteries and pub slot machines.
- All land-based casinos will be allowed to offer sports betting in addition to other gambling activities.
These proposals are expected to come into effect by the summer of 2024, marking a significant change in the UK’s gambling industry
