Flutter, the parent company of PokerStars, has pulled out its application for a Dutch license, according to a report by Casino Nieuws. This means that the poker room won’t be able to resume operations in the local gambling market in 2023 as the licensing process typically takes at least six months.
PokerStars closed its doors in the Netherlands in 2021 due to the pending launch of a regulated online gambling market. Last year, there were reports that PokerStars was looking to make a comeback in the local jurisdiction.
Sources revealed that Flutter took the decision to withdraw their licensing application due to the substantial financial costs associated with the successful licensing process.
In the aftermath of their defeat in the Dutch market, Flutter has redirected their focus to expanding their American business operations, according to industry reports.
Investors have shown confidence in Flutter’s commitment to the American market after backing the company’s proposal to list their securities on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The company’s shares in the NYSE lists are associated with the growing value of the FanDuel brand in Flutter’s revenue structure. This move will further solidify Flutter’s position in the American sports betting market.
Currently, the Dutch poker market remains in limbo following Flutter’s withdrawal, leaving Dutch poker fans to rely on local licensed providers such as Bet365, Unibet, Holland Casino Online, and GGPoker.
