Last week, Spanish police announced the arrest of the alleged leader of a hacker group responsible for launching cyberattacks on numerous companies in the US.

The hacker group, known as Scattered Spider, gained notoriety for orchestrating cyberattacks on major American gambling giants, MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, during the previous year. Notably, Caesars made the decision to pay a ransom of $15 million to the hackers.

The apprehended individual is a 22-year-old British national, believed to be the mastermind behind the operations of the hacking group.

Authorities successfully made the arrest at Palma de Mallorca airport, as the suspect was preparing to board a charter flight bound for Naples, Italy.

According to a statement released by the Spanish National Police, “The suspect… was the leader of an organized group engaged in stealing corporate information and cryptocurrencies, amassing 391 Bitcoin worth $27 million.”

The arrest of the alleged leader comes as MGM Resorts faces another class-action lawsuit from clients following the cyberattack on the company.
