cyberattack

Two of the biggest names in the American gaming and entertainment industry, MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, have been hit by massive cyberattacks last week. The attacks were reportedly carried out by a hacking group called Scattered Spider.

Soc Radar reports that Scattered Spider is an affiliate of the hacking group Black Cat, also known as ALPHV. Black Cat is believed to have strong ties to Russia, based on the analysis of experts.

The group has already bragged about its involvement in the MGM attack on social media.

The cyberattacks caused major disruptions in MGM and Caesars’ operations. Customers were unable to withdraw money from cash desks, ATMs, or slot machines. Some of the systems in the hotels and casinos were shut down as well.

While MGM did not pay any ransom to the hackers, Caesars had to pay $15 million to prevent them from leaking stolen customer data.
