The National Basketball Association (NBA) has introduced new restrictions on sports betting following scandals involving players who deliberately manipulated their own statistics. According to ESPN, the new rules took effect for the 2026–27 season and apply to the league’s sportsbook partners.
One of the restrictions prohibits bets on which player will be the first in a game to:
- score a basket;
- make a three-pointer;
- record a rebound;
- record an assist;
- make a steal;
- block an opponent’s shot.
Sportsbooks are also prohibited from accepting bets on the winner of the opening tip-off and on players missing shots — whether their first or next attempt, or a shot taken during a specified period of play.
Other restrictions target individual player totals. Under the new rules, bettors cannot combine multiple under bets on different statistical categories for the same player in a single parlay. For example, they cannot bet on a player scoring fewer than 10 points and recording fewer than five rebounds in the same parlay.
In addition, under bets are prohibited for players projected to play fewer than 12 minutes. Certain alternative under bets offering boosted odds are also banned.
The stricter rules follow a series of betting scandals involving NBA players. In 2024, the league banned Jontay Porter for life. An investigation found that he had shared insider information and deliberately left games early, helping others win bets on his statistical performance.
Terry Rozier is implicated in a separate case. According to prosecutors, in 2023, he informed an acquaintance in advance that he intended to leave a game early so the person could profit from betting. Rozier has denied the allegations.
To prevent similar manipulation, the NBA has required its sportsbook partners, including DraftKings and FanDuel, to stop offering the restricted types of bets.
The league is also introducing its own artificial intelligence-powered system to monitor suspicious betting activity and making in-person training mandatory for players and coaching staff.
Similar restrictions are set to take effect in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) in 2027.
