Malta-based gambling operator Wildz Group has become the first company to publicly announce that it has received a licence to operate in Finland, where a state monopoly on gambling is currently in place.
The licence will take effect on July 1, 2027, when Finland opens its sports betting and online casino markets to private operators.
At present, state-owned Veikkaus holds the exclusive right to offer gambling services in the country.
Under the reform, private operators will be able to offer gambling under Finnish licences, while Veikkaus will retain its monopoly on lotteries, scratch cards, land-based slot machines and casinos.
However, Wildz Group is not necessarily the first company to have been granted a licence. It is only the first to say so publicly.
By September 22, the Finnish regulator had received 75 licence applications. The authority has not yet published the results of its reviews, so it remains unclear whether other companies have also been granted licences.
Wildz Group’s history dates back to 2019, when it launched the Wildz online casino. The group now also operates Caxino, Wheelz, Spinz and several other casino brands. Some of these, including Chipz and Tuplaus, target Finnish players.
Wildz Group has not yet specified which of its brands will operate in Finland under the new licence.
