Three football matches in Cyprus are under investigation following suspicious betting activity. The Cypriot newspaper Politis reports that the matches took place in the Cypriot Second Division during the 2025/26 season.
Investigators have already completed their reports on two of the matches, which are now being reviewed by the Sports Ethics Committee. The investigation into the third match is ongoing, with findings expected in the coming days.
After reviewing the evidence, the committee will decide whether to refer the cases to the Attorney General for further action.
Meanwhile, authorities are also examining reports of possible match manipulation involving three Cypriot Cup fixtures in the 2026/27 season. One match took place on October 14, while the other two are scheduled for November 3 and 4. Three investigators have been assigned to monitor the games. The clubs involved deny the allegations.
Despite numerous investigations, Cyprus has yet to secure a conviction for match-fixing. According to police data, 96 suspicious matches were reported between 2011 and 2023 alone.
Investigations have been hampered by a lack of evidence, as players, referees and sports officials refuse to testify. In addition, authorities in Asian countries where bets on the suspicious matches were allegedly placed have not responded to requests from Cypriot police for years.
