Greek authorities have temporarily suspended state funding for the Hellenic Basketball Federation amid an investigation into alleged match-fixing. Among those detained is federation president Vangelis Liolios, according to Sport24.
Deputy Sports Minister Giannis Vroutsis made the decision and also ordered a review of the federation’s finances from 2024 to 2026 and a separate audit of its operations.
The measures follow an investigation into suspected manipulation of around 50 basketball games played between 2016 and 2026. Investigators are examining allegations of referee bribery and attempts to influence match outcomes across several divisions, including youth competitions.
Six people have been detained in the case: the federation president, current and former referees, and a businessman. During searches, police found more than €920,000 in cash held by two suspects.
According to Greek media reports, the case involves 49 alleged instances of bribery linked to Liolios. The federation president denies any wrongdoing.
Questioning of the detainees is scheduled to begin on October 23, with Liolios expected to testify on October 25.
