Malaysian authorities have taken a strong stance against illegal gambling promotions on social media, arresting 27 local bloggers for promoting these activities, Focus Asia Pacific reports.
The bloggers, known for their substantial following on social media, were allegedly paid between 1,500 to 8,000 Malaysian ringgits ($320 to $1,700) by gambling syndicates to advertise their services. The payment amount was directly tied to the size of their online audience.
Among those arrested were 23 women and 4 men, all of whom are currently under investigation under local laws. It is anticipated that these bloggers will eventually face monetary fines for their involvement in promoting illegal gambling activities.
The crackdown highlights the ongoing battle against illegal gambling in Malaysia, where online gambling is prohibited, though lotteries and horse racing bets are permitted. The country’s only licensed land-based casino, Resorts World Genting, operates near Kuala Lumpur.
This recent arrest follows a previous report on the collaboration between Telegram and Malaysia to combat illegal gambling on the platform.
