Indonesian authorities are stepping up their fight against online gambling, enlisting the help of Interpol in a collaborative effort to combat this transnational crime. During a recent Meeting on Transnational Crime held in Laos, Indonesian National Police officials met with Interpol representatives to discuss collaborative strategies, as reported by Asia Gaming Brief, citing comments from Inspector General Krishna Murti, head of the International Relations Division of the National Police.

The primary objective of this partnership between Interpol and the Indonesian police is to enhance information sharing to effectively identify and crack down on illegal online gambling activities. Recognizing that online gambling is a regional concern, the Indonesian National Police will also collaborate with law enforcement agencies in other Southeast Asian countries, as highlighted in recent research conducted by the United States Institute of Peace.

In recent times, Indonesian authorities have intensified their efforts to combat gambling, which is outright prohibited in the country. President Joko Widodo established a dedicated task force in June 2024 specifically tasked with addressing the issue of online gambling.

To curb the proliferation of gambling sites, Indonesian authorities have implemented website blocking measures, and travel bans have been imposed on individuals suspected of involvement in the gambling industry.

It is important to note that participants and organizers of gambling activities in Indonesia face severe criminal penalties, including potential imprisonment of up to 10 years. Despite these strict regulations, millions of Indonesians continue to participate in gambling activities. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, the Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center flagged over $36.4 billion in transactions that were potentially linked to gambling.
