Telegram, the messaging app founded and led by Pavel Durov, has agreed to work with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to curb illegal gambling on the app.
The agreement was reached after a meeting between Durov and Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil in Dubai, UAE.
Under the agreement, Telegram will identify and block gambling content and frauds that violate Malaysian laws, targeting only Malaysian users.
Telegram is widely used in Malaysia, with 15 million users, or nearly half of the country’s population. The minister raised concerns about the increasing presence of illegal gambling and fraud on the app during the meeting. However, the exact details of how Telegram and Malaysia will cooperate are still unclear.
Malaysia has a mixed stance on gambling, with a monopoly on land-based casinos and some lottery options. However, all forms of online gambling are banned.
