Italy’s failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup has resulted in around 5% of bets on the tournament winner being lost, British business outlet City AM reported, citing data from Sportradar.
The four-time world champions were eliminated by Bosnia and Herzegovina on penalties in a playoff, meaning they will miss a third consecutive World Cup. Italy had been among the more popular picks in the outright winner market.
According to Sportradar, Spain accounts for the largest share of bets at 18%.
Reigning champions Argentina follow with 13%, while France and Brazil each hold 8%, and England stands at 7%.
Italy accounted for around 5% of bets despite a series of disappointing qualification campaigns since 2014. Interest in Germany was notably lower, at just 2%.
Tournament hosts — the United States, Mexico, and Canada — have each attracted less than 1%.
In the top scorer market, Kylian Mbappé, who plays for both France and Real Madrid CF, leads with 38% of all bets. He is followed by Erling Haaland of Manchester City FC with 16%, while Harry Kane, England’s captain, accounts for 10%.
Earlier, Gambling Park reported that the UN had warned illegal betting at the 2026 World Cup could outpace the regulated market.
