FIFA has expelled Atlético San Cristóbal from the top division of the Dominican Football League for involvement in match-fixing. According to a decision published on FIFA’s website, the club violated Article 20 of the Disciplinary Code, which prohibits any form of manipulation of football match results.
The team will be relegated to the second tier of the national championship starting next season. The Dominican Football Federation has also been instructed to develop an educational program aimed at preventing similar violations in the future.
Atlético San Cristóbal, founded in 2015, represents the city of San Cristóbal. The club plays its home matches at Estadio Panamericano. Throughout its participation in the national league, the team has not achieved significant results and has often finished near the bottom of the table.
This season, the club sits in last place with just 2 points after 12 of 18 rounds. Other teams in the league include Cibao, Atlético Pantoja, Moca, Atlético Vega Real, Jarabacoa, Delfines del Este and others.
Details of the investigation — including which matches were manipulated and who may have been involved — have not yet been disclosed. There have been no official comments from the league or the national federation.
As Gambling Park previously reported, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has warned that match-fixing poses an existential threat to football.
