A recent study commissioned by British bookmaker Lottoland, as reported by The Irish Sun, has shed light on the factors that influence horse race betting decisions among Brits. The findings have unveiled some intriguing insights.
The survey of 2,000 respondents found that almost half (46%) of bettors choose a horse based on its moniker. The funnier the name, the more likely they are to place a wager.
Interestingly, 28% of respondents said they don’t necessarily seek out unusual names but prefer monikers associated with luck or wealth.
These findings indicate that a significant portion of horse racing enthusiasts in the UK pay little attention to traditional betting factors such as odds, recent performance statistics, or the horse’s current form.
The study also found that 69% of respondents view horse betting as a form of entertainment, not a serious investment.
In terms of attending races, a majority of 62% of participants reported that they usually experience the excitement firsthand. This physical presence at the racecourse often influences their betting decisions, leading to impulsive wagers (particularly on horses with amusing names). However, when watching races on TV, bettors tend to adopt a more analytical approach, carefully considering stats and odds before placing their bets.
