A recent study conducted by AGP Pesquisas, commissioned by the SBVC retail association, sheds light on the betting behavior of Brazilians, as reported by The Brazilian Report. The survey, which included 1,337 participants from Latin America’s largest country, uncovered some concerning trends.

The survey found that 37% of respondents had used betting sites at least once in their lives, with 58% of these users being men.

More than 50% of betting platform users place bets at least once a week, with football wagers proving to be the most popular choice among bettors, accounting for 77% of all wagers.

However, the study also revealed the negative social impacts associated with excessive gambling:

  • 63% of respondents experienced income loss due to gambling losses.
  • 23% of respondents avoid buying clothes to save money for betting.
  • 19% of respondents forgo purchasing food and other supermarket items for betting.
  • 11% of respondents skip buying medications and medical services to place bets.

The study also pointed out the correlation between the prevalence of betting and match-fixing issues in Brazil. According to Sportradar, the country led the world in the number of suspicious matches identified in 2022 and 2023.

It was previously reported that the total amount wagered by Brazilians increased by over 30% from January to April 2024.
