A surprising dispute unfolded in Ningbo, China, when company management demanded an employee share their $820,000 lottery win with colleagues, reports the South China Morning Post. While this incident occurred back in 2019, it has only recently gained widespread attention in the media.
The controversy began at a year-end corporate party where company leadership handed out lottery tickets to employees as part of the celebration. To everyone’s astonishment, one ticket hit the jackpot, yielding a prize of over 6 million yuan (approximately $820,000).
The company’s leadership, openly envious of the winner, demanded that the lucky ticket holder “be generous” and split the winnings among all coworkers who attended the party.
Unsurprisingly, the employee refused the request, escalating tensions. Frustrated, management involved local authorities, but the police found no legal wrongdoing.
Officers advised both parties to seek legal counsel to resolve the matter.
The story’s conclusion remains unclear, but it’s widely assumed that the winner kept the prize money and resigned from the company soon after.
Tang Caizong, a legal expert with Ningbo’s Bureau of Justice, later weighed in on the case. He clarified that distributing the tickets constituted a form of gifting, transferring ownership to the recipients. Once handed out, the rights to the tickets and any associated winnings belonged solely to the employees.
