The British gambling giant Flutter is exploring the opportunity to acquire Italy’s lottery license, valued at €1 billion, according to the Irish Times.

Italy’s Customs and Monopolies Agency (ADM), which oversees the country’s gambling regulations, has opened the bidding process for a nine-year lottery license.

The base bid is set at €1 billion, but if multiple applications are submitted, an auction will determine the winner.

The current license is held by International Game Technology (IGT), which has operated as Italy’s sole lottery provider for the past 30 years. That license is set to expire this year.

Flutter CEO Peter Jackson previously expressed interest in the Italian lottery market, stating in an interview last year that the company would consider bidding if the terms were economically favorable.

IGT has already indicated its intent to retain the license. The deadline for license applications is March 17.
