South Korean football player Son Jun-ho has been arrested by Chinese authorities as part of a nationwide probe into match-fixing and corruption.

It is unclear whether the player faces any charges or if he is only a witness in the case. He is currently in custody at the Public Security Department in Liaoning Province.

According to local media, the athlete has been questioned about possible match-fixing involving his Chinese team coach Hao Wei of Shandong Taishan. Son Jun-ho also plays for the same team.

No more details have been given about the arrest, except that it happened on the South Korean player’s birthday. It is also reported that Chinese police have interviewed some of Son Jun-ho’s teammates from Shandong Taishan.

As a side note: Son Jun-ho is a 31-year-old central midfielder who has played for South Korea in 20 international matches. He appeared in three games at the recent World Cup in Qatar, coming off the bench each time.
