The Overijssel District Court has ordered the bookmaker Unibet to compensate a player €676,225 for losses incurred over a ten-year period, according to Casino Nieuws.
The player’s losses, which occurred between 2011 and 2021, were deemed to have been incurred during a period when Unibet did not hold a Dutch betting license. The court concluded that the operator should not have been targeting customers from the Netherlands during this time.
In addition to the €676,225 compensation, Unibet must also cover legal costs amounting to €9,588.
This combined sum surpasses €685,000, making it a record-breaking figure for legal claims involving gambling companies in the Netherlands.
Commenting on the court’s verdict, the player’s lawyer, Benzi Loonstein, stated, ““Of course we are happy that the judge ruled in our favor in this case. This ruling fits in with the trend in case law in which claims from former players are generally granted.”
In related news, there have been reports of another Dutch player suing Bwin for losses amounting to €200,000 over an eleven-year period.
