A large number of poker chips that may have been used in World Series of Poker (WSOP) tournaments in Las Vegas have appeared for sale on eBay. According to Card Player, this could potentially encourage fraudulent activity by players.
For example, one eBay seller is offering WSOP-branded tournament chips with a face value of $100 for just $33.99 each. Chips valued at $5,000 are also being sold, priced at only $300 apiece.
At this point, it’s unclear whether these chips are authentic or not. Judging by the photos alone, it’s challenging to verify their authenticity.
However, poker experts have noted that the chips appear identical to those used at WSOP events.
All the chips bear the inscription “NO CASH VALUE.” As Gambling Park highlights, this means they cannot be exchanged for cash at the casinos hosting WSOP tournaments. Nevertheless, another serious concern remains.
There is a possibility that players could buy these previously used chips online and discreetly add them to their chip stacks during future WSOP tournaments, gaining an unfair advantage over competitors.
Such cheating incidents have happened before. In 2014, player Christian Lusardi used counterfeit chips to gain an advantage during the Borgata Winter Poker Open, though tournament organizers ultimately uncovered the scheme.
