U.S. Gambling Spend Hits $172 Billion in 2024

Americans spent $172 billion on gambling in 2024, according to iGaming Business, citing data from Eilers & Krejcik Gaming. The figure represents a 3.3% increase from 2023.
Brick-and-mortar casinos dominated regulated gambling markets, accounting for 56% of total spending, while lotteries made up 22%.
The exact share of sports betting was not disclosed, but the report highlighted a 34% surge in online wagering, driven by the launch of regulated markets in Vermont and North Carolina.
Meanwhile, retail bookmakers saw a 24% decline in 2024, while online casino gaming and poker grew by 29%.
Land-based casinos generated 61% of the industry’s total gross gaming revenue (GGR*), while lotteries contributed 22%, mirroring their share of consumer spending. The report did not specify sports betting’s share of GGR or provide a total revenue figure.
According to the American Gaming Association, U.S. gambling markets recorded $66.5 billion in GGR in 2023.
