The American Gaming Association (AGA) has revealed the Gross Gaming Revenue (GGR*) for the U.S. commercial gaming market for last year. The GGR reached $66.52 billion, a 10% jump from 2022 and a new national record. Amazingly, this is the third year in a row that the U.S. GGR from commercial gaming has broken the record.
For reference: commercial gambling in the U.S. covers the whole gambling industry except for state lotteries and Native American-run venues. If you add the revenues from tribal gaming venues, the number goes up from $66.52 billion to almost $110 billion.
Besides the annual GGR, 2023 also saw record highs for quarterly GGR ($17.42 billion in October–December) and monthly GGR ($6.22 billion in December).
Land-Based Gaming — The Top Earner
When it comes to the breakdown of revenue by types of gaming, land-based venues are still the king, making up 74% of the total amount, and over 75% if we add land-based sports betting. Online betting comes in second, followed by online casinos. However, the online sector has been growing faster than the land-based sector since the pandemic.

Nevada — Regional GGR Champ
Among the regions, Nevada (home to Las Vegas) keeps its top spot in GGR with a huge lead, followed by New Jersey. The third place goes to the Chicagoland area, the informal name for the Chicago metro area, which spans parts of Indiana and Illinois.

* GGR is a financial metric used to measure gross earnings, calculated by subtracting total winnings from total bets.
