Twitch, the streaming platform, is taking a stand against gambling, and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) is in its crosshairs.
The company recently updated its community guidelines, and now skins gambling in CS:GO is off-limits. Twitch said, “promotion or sponsorship of skins gambling is prohibited under our policy.”
Skins gambling in CS:GO is a big deal for streamers and players. They bet on virtual items that can be used to customize weapons and characters in the game.
For now, Twitch only banned sponsorships, but this could be a sign of things to come.
Opening CS:GO skin cases is also a huge attraction for viewers. It’s like playing the lottery with virtual items. Streamers spend a fortune on these cases, hoping to get rare and valuable skins. But most of the time, they end up with junk. For example, streamer ohnePixel spent $130,000 on cases but only got skins worth 4,000.
Twitch has also added more gambling platforms to its blacklist. It already banned Blaze and Gamdom casinos last fall. Now it also forbids sharing links or ref codes to any roulette, casino, or dice game sites.
Twitch said these actions were taken “to protect our users, combat the negative impact of gambling, and ensure Twitch operates in a safer environment, as we did last year.”
But despite the new rules, there’s still a lot of gambling going on in the gaming world. And without proper regulation, it can lead to addiction and financial ruin.
