A Wrexham player has been sanctioned for breaching the Football Association’s betting rules, according to a ruling by an independent disciplinary commission – the BBC reports.
The commission found that Tom O’Connor placed 16 bets on football matches between April 23, 2017, and May 25, 2021. During that period, O’Connor was registered with Southampton and Gillingham. Five of the bets were placed on competitions involving his own team, in violation of FA regulations.
O’Connor admitted the charges and cooperated fully with the investigation. As a result, the commission imposed a fine of £4,200 (approximately $5,300) and issued a formal warning. No sporting sanctions, including a suspension, were applied.
The 26-year-old defender is currently under contract with Wrexham and is playing on loan for Peterborough United, which competes in England’s third-tier league.
Gambling Park notes: his contract with the Welsh club runs until the summer of 2027. Wrexham is co-owned by Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds, whose involvement has brought the club heightened international media attention in recent years.
