Kentucky is joining the sports betting bandwagon, as the state’s Horse Racing Commission (KHRC) has approved regulations that will allow sportsbooks to open on September 7th.
Online sports betting will also kick off 3 weeks later, at the end of September, giving Kentucky residents more options to place their wagers.
Kentucky becomes the 38th state in the U.S. to legalize sportsbook operations, following the Supreme Court’s decision in 2018 that struck down a federal ban on sports gambling.
The cost of a gambling license in the state is $500,000, with an additional $50,000 required for annual renewal. Operators will have to pay a tax rate of 9.75% on retail bets and 14.25% on online wagers. KHRC will serve as the gambling regulator.
Vermont is expected to be the next state to legalize sports betting, with a target date of January 2024.
