Indonesian investigative journalist Sempurna Pasaribu and his family tragically perished in a fire at their home, raising suspicions of foul play potentially linked to his investigation into illegal gambling operations. Police are investigating the incident, with murder being considered as a possible cause.
According to Sigma.World, Pasaribu, who worked for the Tribrata TV channel, was investigating illegal gambling activities allegedly involving members of the Indonesian military.
Reports suggest that an unnamed Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) soldier had previously threatened Pasaribu, who was reportedly a subject in his investigation.
While authorities are investigating the cause of the fire, an accidental cause is also being considered. Some witnesses mentioned that gasoline was stored in Pasaribu’s house, and a fuel spill could have led to the blaze.
Indonesia ranks 111th out of 180 countries in terms of press freedom, according to Reporters Without Borders. Local journalists investigating corruption often face intimidation from police or TNI soldiers.
