Polymarket users assess the likelihood of a new pandemic
A possible hantavirus pandemic has become a notable topic on prediction platform Polymarket following reports of an outbreak on the cruise ship MV Hondius.
The vessel departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on April 1, 2026. Eight cases of illness were later identified among passengers, five of them laboratory-confirmed as hantavirus. Three deaths were reported.
Some passengers left the ship before the outbreak was confirmed, prompting authorities in several countries to trace people who may have had contact with infected individuals.
The related market on Polymarket opened on May 4, 2026.
Platform users currently put the probability of a hantavirus pandemic in 2026 at about 10%. The market has generated about $2.5 million in trading volume.

The market will resolve to “Yes” only if the World Health Organization (WHO) officially characterises Hantavirus, Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome, Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome or a related outbreak as a “pandemic” by the end of 2026. A declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern alone would not be sufficient.
Hantaviruses are viruses usually carried by rodents and can cause severe lung or kidney disease, in some cases with fatal outcomes. However, they typically do not spread between people in the same way as influenza or coronavirus.
The WHO has already said the MV Hondius situation is not the start of a pandemic or a repeat of COVID-19. The organisation assesses the risk to the public as low, although it has not ruled out further cases given the virus’s incubation period.
