Current U.S. President Joe Biden officially announced his withdrawal from the presidential race on Sunday, July 21. As part of his announcement, Biden proposed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s candidate for the presidency, a proposal that Harris accepted with the intent to run for office.
The news of Biden’s exit and Harris’s candidacy prompted bookmakers to swiftly adjust the betting odds in response to the shifting political landscape. Harris, who was already a strong contender earlier this month (ranking second in the bookmakers’ list of potential winners), now sees her chances of winning the election significantly improve as she steps in for Biden.
William Hill, a leading bookmaker, estimates that Harris now has a 33.3% chance of becoming President, with odds set at 3.0.
While Republican candidate Donald Trump remains the frontrunner, his odds of winning have slightly decreased from 73.5% to 66.6% over the past week.
Here’s a look at the current top 5 contenders in the U.S. presidential election betting market at William Hill:
Potential Candidate | Betting Odds | Probability |
Donald Trump | 1.5 | 66.6% |
Kamala Harris | 3.0 | 33.3% |
Michelle Obama | 17.0 | 5.9% |
Gavin Newsom | 21.0 | 4.8% |
Hillary Clinton | 41.0 | 2.4% |
