Bali, Indonesia

The proposal to construct world-class casinos in Bali has been dismissed by the head of the Bali Tourism Office, citing conflicts with local laws and the essence of Balinese culture, as reported by Asia News Network.

The Indonesian Young Entrepreneurs Association (HIPMI) had put forward the idea of establishing casino resorts in Bali to elevate tourism and bolster economic revenues.

Projections suggested an annual influx of approximately $740 million through the introduction of gambling venues, aiming to position Bali as a competitive rival to established gambling destinations like Singapore.

Agung Bagus Pratiksa Linggih, the Bali HIPMI chairman, recognized the need for legislative adjustments to accommodate casino operations, considering Indonesia’s strict prohibition on all forms of gambling. The proposal aimed to restrict gambling activities within the casinos to foreign tourists, with Indonesian citizens excluded. Agung stressed the importance of incorporating at least 50% of local residents in the management of these potential establishments.

Contrary to HIPMI’s stance, Tjokorda Bagus Pemayun, the head of the Bali Tourism Office, opposed the casino proposal citing both cultural disparities and existing national laws that unequivocally prohibit gambling ventures.

It is pertinent to highlight that online gambling remains a prevalent issue in Indonesia, despite being outlawed. Recent data from Indonesia’s Financial Transaction Reports and Analysis Center flagged payment transactions exceeding $36.4 billion in the first quarter of 2024, suspected to be linked to online gambling activities.
