Sri Lankan authorities have thrown a major curveball at the Lanka Premier League (LPL) after arresting Tamim Rahman, owner of the Dambulla Thunders franchise, on suspicion of match-fixing, according to the Colombo Gazette.
Rahman, a British citizen of Bangladeshi origin, was apprehended at the country’s main airport as he attempted to depart for Dubai.
Police and immigration confirmed that the arrest was made based on a court-issued warrant. Rahman is expected to remain in custody until at least May 31st while investigations unfold.
The specific charges against Rahman include match-fixing and organizing betting activities. While details remain under wraps, this marks a significant development for the LPL, as it’s the first time a league official has been arrested for such offenses in the tournament’s 4-year history.
If convicted under Sri Lankan law, Rahman could face significant financial penalties and potentially a decade behind bars.
