Spain’s stock market regulator, the CNMV, has fined former Barcelona and Spain defender Gerard Piqué €200,000 for insider trading, The Athletic reported.
The case relates to a stock market transaction in January 2021.
According to the regulator, Piqué bought 104,166 shares in Aspy Global Services while already in possession of non-public information about a planned acquisition of the company by Atrys Health.
The CNMV found that the information had been passed to him by businessman Francisco José Elías Navarro.
After the deal was disclosed, Aspy shares rose in value. Piqué sold the shares a few days later and made a profit.
Elías was fined €100,000 for disclosing privileged information. Both men can appeal the decision in a Spanish court.
Although the share transactions took place in 2021, the decision became public only in 2026. Such cases require a lengthy review: regulators must establish not only that shares were bought and sold, but also that the investor received non-public information before it was officially disclosed.
Piqué retired from football in 2022 but remains one of the most prominent figures in Spanish sport. During his career, he won nine Spanish league titles and four Champions League trophies with Barcelona, and as well as the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012 with Spain.
Outside football, Piqué is widely known for his long relationship with singer Shakira. The couple separated in 2022.
