The Association of Professional Footballers of Peru (Safap) has called on the Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) to investigate possible match-fixing in the country’s top division, Liga 1.

This comes after one of the Liga 1 teams, FC Academia Cantolao, found out that some of their players might be involved in corruption.

Another reason for this move was a shocking revelation by Safap’s President, Roberto Silva, who confirmed that a player was threatened by a mafia with a gun to rig a game. What’s worse, the player’s own club set up this meeting.

This information about the powerful sports mafia in Peruvian football was backed up by current Academia Cantolao player, Mario Tajima, and former pro player, Víctor Rossel.

Mario Tajima said, “In Peruvian football, it is known that this is a mafia that has been going on for a long time. It is not my place to point fingers or name names, but it is time for a change”.

It’s worth noting that this corruption scandal in Peruvian football came a month after a similar one in neighboring Bolivia, where the local federation canceled the whole championship due to widespread match-fixing allegations.

So far, the FPF has not responded to Safap’s request.
