A district court in Rotterdam has ruled that bookmaker Betsson must pay €530,000 to a player, according to court documents.
The case was brought by a customer — referred to in court filings as “Eric” — who claimed the operator was running an illegal gambling platform in the Netherlands. The dispute stems from losses totaling €385,400 that Eric incurred in 2014 while betting on the company’s platform.
The player argued that at the time of the losses, BML Group Limited — part of the Betsson Group — did not hold a valid license to operate in the country. The group has since obtained proper licensing.
The court sided with the player, declaring the agreement between him and BML Group Limited invalid. On that basis, the judge ordered the company to return the full amount deposited. Betsson was also ordered to pay €144,622 in lost potential winnings, as well as cover the player’s legal costs.
Betsson representatives did not appear in court for the hearing.
