Stuart Andrew

According to the Racing Post, Stuart Andrew, the Deputy Secretary of State for Sport, Tourism, and Civil Society, will become the minister in charge of reforming gambling legislation in the UK.

Andrew, a member of the Conservative Party, is set to become the sixth minister tasked with reviewing gambling laws since the sector began undergoing reforms in December 2020. His predecessor, Paul Scully, left the post as part of a government reshuffle, Rishi Sunak’s government.

The British gambling sector is eagerly anticipating the release of the revised gambling laws white paper, which has been delayed several times. Andrew’s appointment as minister responsible for gambling reform could lead to the white paper’s release before the Easter holidays at the end of March.

Initial reports indicate that the revised gambling regulations may require gambling companies to conduct financial checks on players and allocate funds for research into gambling addiction.

The maximum betting amount for online slots may also be decreased, and football clubs could potentially limit their partnerships with gambling companies on a voluntary basis.

It should be noted that Stuart Andrew, the newly appointed minister responsible for gambling reform in the UK, received a gift from the betting company Paddy Power in 2021. The gift was a ticket to attend the England-Germany match and was reportedly worth over €2,000.
