High roller Lester Hui

London’s Aspinall’s casino, run by Australian operator Crown Resorts, is in a legal battle with one of its high rollers who lost $750,000 playing baccarat. According to the Evening Standard, the player is refusing to pay his debt and is making counter-accusations against the casino.

Lester Hui, who lost a huge amount of money, claims that the casino’s employees contributed to his excessive gambling expenses by continuously providing him with the Chinese alcoholic beverage “Moutai” (with an alcohol content ranging from 53% to 55%) throughout the game.

As a result, Hui claims that he “drank himself unconscious” and was unable to comprehend the consequences of his actions.

Huai’s lawyers argue that the casino breached its obligations under its social responsibility as a gambling business by allowing the player to gamble while in an inebriated state. Representatives of Aspinall’s, however, believe that the man was sober enough to make conscious decisions.

After the game, Hui wrote a check to the casino, which was later canceled. The incident occurred on February 9th, 2016. Aspinall’s tried to recover the debt for several years without going to court. However, in 2019, the lawsuit was finally filed. Four years later, the case has yet to be resolved.
