The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is taking a stand against shady betting practices by using the ProhiBet system, a state-of-the-art tool that tracks bets made by insiders.
ProhiBet is a joint venture between UFC, Odds On Compliance, and U.S. Integrity, which is UFC’s official betting partner.
In a video released by the UFC for its fighters, the system is explained as follows: ProhiBet will track bets on UFC fights by anyone who has insider information about the fighters, such as their coaches, trainers, doctors, family members, and others. The system will then report any suspicious betting activity to the authorities.
The move comes after a scandal involving the fight between Shayilan Nuerdanbieke and Darrick Minner on November 5, 2022. Minner entered the fight injured and lost quickly. The fight was marred by shady betting patterns, leading to an FBI investigation. It turned out that Minner’s coach was betting against him and knew about his injury. This, along with a series of unusual bets on Minner’s loss, resulted in both the fighter and his coach being banned from the UFC. The case is still under investigation.
The UFC video warns that anyone who bets on UFC fights, either directly or through third parties, will face severe consequences, such as fines, suspensions, or contract termination.
